    Last month, the new Berlin Rehabilitation Center opened its doors to patients. The 10,000㎡ facility is already getting rave reviews, but what most people don’t know is that every piece of furniture in it was designed based on 14 days of watching patients struggle with bad furniture at the old center. We interviewed 72 patients and 38 therapists, and we changed every single design based on what they told us.

    The Problem No One Talks About

    Most rehabilitation furniture is designed for nurses, not patients. It’s easy to clean, easy to move, and cheap to manufacture—but it’s terrible for people who are trying to recover from injuries or illnesses.

    “Our old beds had rails that only went up halfway,” said Dr. Hans Mueller, the center’s medical director. “Patients would try to pull themselves up, and their hands would slip off the end. We had 12 falls in one year because of those stupid rails. When we told the manufacturer about it, they said ‘that’s our standard design.’”

We also added grab bars on both sides of the bed, exactly where patients told us they needed them—not where it was easiest to drill holes.

    Our new therapy tables adjust from 40cm to 120cm high with the push of a button. That means therapists don’t have to bend over to treat patients, and patients in wheelchairs can transfer onto the table easily. We also added a non-slip surface that keeps patients from sliding around during treatment.
